Introduction

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the biggest island country in Europe with an area of 244.101 square kilometres. The country consists of four constituent parts: England, Scotland, Wales and the province of Northern Ireland (island of Ireland). England is surrounded by the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea, the Irish Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. The frontier with the France ist lacated in the middle of the Channel Tunnel.

Geography

The geography of the United Kingdom is characterized by flat terrains. The rivers Tees and Exe divides the island in two imagine parts: a very flat one and the other one is buildet by hills. The most important mountain chains are: the Cumbrian Mountains, the Pennines, the Peak District, the Cotswolds and the Chilterns. Many rivers traverses the land. The largest of them are: Themse, Severn, Trent, Great Ouse and Humber. The largest cities of the UK are London, Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Leeds, Bristol und Newcastle-upon-Tyne. London is the capital city of the United Kingdom and the most populous city in the European Union with nearly 7,5 millions citizens. The highest mountain of Great Britain is the Ben Nevis (1.344 meters) in Scotland - a part of the island with different landscapes with plain Lowlands in south and east and mountainous Highlands in north and west. Wales is very hilly too except for a flat clime in south. The highest mountain in Wales is the Snowdon with 1.085 meters of height. A major division of the geologic timescale "Cambrian" is named to a mountain region in Wales.

Climate

The climate situation in Great Britain varied, but is altogether moderate. On the basis of Gulf Stream is on the island marked warmer as in other regions on the same degree of latitudes. The climate in south of the island is in global drier and warmer as in north. The wind blows generally from southwest from direction of Atlantic Ocean. Average temperatures in Britain amounts between 3 - 7 °C in January and 11 — 17 °C in July. More than a half of the year is the sky clouded. The amount of rainfall averages about 1.000 mm in north and about 700 mm in south. For comparison: the average of the rainfall in Germany amounts between 500 - 700 mm per year. According to this is England more rainy than Germany.
