Im Gegensatz zu einem Supercomputer, der aus Hunderten zusammengeschalteten CPU's besteht, wird beim Distributed Computing die Rechenleistung mittels Splittings der Rechenoperationen an mehrere PCs verteilt. Auf den Heim-PCs, auf denen ein entsprechender Client läuft, wird die Rechenarbeit im Hintergrund oder bei Nichtbenutzung des PCs ausgeführt und die Ergebnisse bei Abschluss der Rechenoperationen den zentralen Server gesendet. Um den Benutzern die Teilnahme an solchen Projekten schmackhaft zu machen, werden registrierte User für den erfolgreichen Abschluss einer sogenannten ''Work Unit (WU)'' mit Punkten belohnt. Auch ein Zusammenschluss zu Teams ist bei den meisten Projekten möglich. Distributed Computing erreicht eine Rechenleistung, die an die viele kommerziellen Supercomputer heranreicht und sie sogar übertrifft. Wenn anfangs in einem PC nur die CPU für Rechenoperationen benutzt werden konnte, wird mittlerweile die Leistung der GPU der Grafikkarten unterstützt.<br />

Distributed Computing war Anfang der 2000er sehr populär. In den letzten Jahren ließ das Interesse für die Teilnahme zunehmend nach. SETI@home, das seit 1999 eines der führenden Distributed-Computing-Projekte war, wurde zum 31. März 2020 eingestellt.
